Where to Find a Notary in Colorado
You only need a notary for self-created documents like the SSN affidavit, not for anything already issued by a government office. Here's where to look.
Notarization comes up exactly once in this whole process for most international couples: the Social Security number affidavit, if you don’t have an SSN to put on your license application (see the SSN affidavit, explained for what that form is). Here’s the line between when you actually need one and when you don’t.
When you need a notary
Notarization is for self-created or self-signed documents: something like the SSN affidavit, where you’re personally attesting to something in writing. You do not need a notary for documents that a government office has already issued or certified, like a certified copy of your marriage certificate from the county clerk. Those already carry their own official certification; stacking a notary on top of them isn’t how the process works. (See is apostilled the same as notarised? for more on that distinction.)
Where to get something notarized
- UPS Store locations commonly offer notary services, and are a practical option if you need one while traveling. Not every location offers it, though; call ahead before you make a special trip. See where to print documents in Denver for specific Denver locations; a UPS Store can often handle notary and printing in one stop.
- Some counties let the deputy clerk notarize on the spot, right at your license appointment, which sidesteps the need to find an outside notary at all. See how to fill in the license application for more on this; El Paso County is one confirmed example. We’re tracking this as a data point on the counties list alongside distance, appointment requirements, and walk-in policy, so check there first for your specific county.
We haven't compiled a full list of which counties offer on-the-spot notarization versus which require an outside notary. Check with your specific county clerk's office ahead of your appointment.
Still to add: exact UPS Store (or other) locations near each county clerk's office in our counties list that confirm they offer notary service, rather than a general "call ahead" pointer. Worth pairing with a couple's specific county choice rather than leaving them to search on arrival.
The takeaway
Check with your county clerk first: if they can notarize your SSN affidavit on the spot, you can skip this step entirely. If not, a UPS Store is usually the easiest fallback, but call ahead to confirm the specific location offers notary services before you go.
