Adams County's Marriage License Process

Adams County requires an appointment at both its Brighton and Bennett offices, booked online through the county's own portal. What to know before you book.

Adams County requires an appointment at both of its offices, no walk-in option at either one, and the pre-application has to be completed before you show up. Here’s what to have ready.

Where to go

Fill out the pre-application first

Adams County runs its own online pre-application, the Marriage Kiosk. Do this before you try to book anything: the booking portal asks for your Adams County Order/ Transaction Number before it lets you pick a slot, and that number only exists once you’ve completed the Marriage Kiosk application. See how to fill in the license application for the general country-field and confirmation-number tips that apply here too.

Book an appointment: no walk-ins

Both offices require an appointment; there’s no walk-in option at either one. Book Brighton through the county’s online booking portal using the transaction number from your Marriage Kiosk application; it opens slots up to 60 days ahead. For Bennett, book by calling 720-523-6020 directly.

If you don’t have a Social Security number

Adams County’s version is the Marriage License Social Security Affidavit, a one-page downloadable PDF titled “Affidavit and Oath.” Its signature block is set up for a Deputy Clerk, Notary Public, or the County Clerk & Recorder to swear you in, so a deputy clerk can handle it at your appointment and you don’t need to find a notary beforehand. Fill in your name, but leave the signature blank until you’re at the counter: you sign it under oath in front of whoever witnesses it. See the SSN affidavit, explained for the general picture.

What it costs

  • License fee: $30.
  • Certified copy of the certificate: $1.25 each.
  • Cash or card, with a 3% surcharge on card payments.

Contact

  • Phone (Recording, handles marriage licenses): 720-523-6020
  • Clerk and Recorder direct line: 720-523-6500
  • Email: [email protected]

While you’re in the area

Historic Downtown Brighton, a walkable Main Street district with preserved storefronts and the Brighton Museum inside City Hall, sits close to the Government Center. Barr Lake State Park is nearby too, but it’s more of a short drive than a walk from the office.

Quick answers

Do you need an appointment for an Adams County marriage license?

Yes, at both the Brighton and Bennett offices. There's no walk-in option. Book through the county's online portal for Brighton, or by phone for Bennett.

Can you get a marriage license at the Bennett office instead of Brighton?

Yes, Adams County also issues marriage licenses from its smaller Bennett office, not just the main Brighton location. Appointments there are booked by phone rather than the online portal.

Can you return a signed Adams County marriage license to a different office than where you picked it up?

Unconfirmed. Adams County's own page just says to return the signed license to the Recording Department, either by mail or in person, without stating whether in-person returns have to go to the same office (Brighton or Bennett) it was issued from. Mailing it in avoids the question entirely, since it goes to the Recording Department either way. If you're picking up at Bennett but planning to return in person at Brighton (or vice versa), call 720-523-6020 first to confirm.
