Elbert County's Marriage License Process
A small, walk-in county with no appointment system: apply in person at the Kiowa courthouse, or online through Elbert's self-service portal.
Elbert County is small and rural, with no appointment system either way you apply: walk in at the counter, or apply online through the county’s self-service portal.
Where to go
Elbert County Courthouse, 440 Comanche Street, Kiowa, CO 80117. Open Monday–Thursday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM. Closed Fridays, a four-day workweek common among Colorado’s smaller counties.

Elbert County runs an online self-service portal for the marriage license application, alongside the option to walk in and apply at the counter; there’s no appointment system either way. See how to fill in the license application for the general tips that apply to the online route.
If you don’t have a Social Security number
The county provides its own SSN Affidavit, signed at the time of application, similar to every other Colorado county: you sign it with the clerk on the spot, no separate notary needed. See the SSN affidavit, explained and where to find a notary if some other document in your paperwork does need one.
Note that Colorado only requires the last four digits of a Social Security number on the marriage license application itself (a full SSN is only required for civil unions), per Elbert’s own marriage license information sheet.
What it costs
- License fee: $30, the statewide standard.
- Card online, cash in person. If you apply through the self-service portal, you can pay by credit card. If you apply in person at the counter, it’s cash only.

We found conflicting phone numbers for the general Clerk and Recorder line across different sources; the recording line above is the one consistently tied to marriage-license information.
While you’re in the area
Elbert County itself is quiet, rural plains territory; the closest genuinely notable stop is Castlewood Canyon State Park, with canyon hiking trails and a historic dam site, about 25-30 minutes west near Franktown. It’s technically in Douglas County, more of an “on the way” stop than something inside Elbert County itself.
